Based in West Cork, Dunmanus Seafoods are a small family owned business producing and selling Sea Urchins. In business since 1994, the company offers a wide range of products to customers across the world.

The company was set up in response to declining availability of native urchins around the Irish coast due to contiunuous overfishing.

Dumanus Seafoods facilities include a successful hatchery with an annual production and sale of over 1 million juveniles.

Dunmanus are also collaborating with development agencies and Universities on a range of pilot R&D projects looking at issues such as successful ongrowing substrates and feeding regimes.

The "Roe" is the edible part of the Urchin. Sea urchin roe has been a delicacy in Japan, Asia, and Europe for more than 20 years.

The demand for sea urchin roe, called “uni” in sushi bars has grown dramatically over the past decade and thus urchins demand a high market price.

Exactly what is sea urchin roe? Inside both male and female urchins there are five gonadal “tongues” that can grow up to two inches long and an inch wide. Inside the tongues are nutritive cells with either eggs (roe) or sperm.
